Module structure
The module will be delivered in three hour sessions as shown in the programme. Teaching sessions are on Mondays 09.00 – 12.00.
 
Module aims
The overall aim of this module is to introduce participants to the key principles of the theory and practice of human resource management.  In doing so it will provide students with the opportunity to deal with complex issues and to tackle problems in this area of management.
 
Learning outcomes
 
At the end of the module the learner is expected to be able to:
 
Understand and distinguish various models of HRM and Employee Relations.
 
Have an understanding of key HRM / Personnel Management policies and practices, e.g. recruitment, development, reward, discipline, and grievance handling.
 
Understand employee relations perspectives and issues, e.g. conflict, representation, and participation.
 
 
Throughout the module we will be using a range of activities such as workshops, lectures, case studies and small group working to enable you to demonstrate your ability to put theory into practice.
 
It is hoped that you will enjoy the module as learning occurs best when it is associated with interest.  If you have any difficulty then be assured that the teaching team will do their best to help you

If you wish to see any member of the teaching team please advise us at the beginning or the end of the lecturer or email us.  These are the best ways of making contact.  You can of course telephone but we are often teaching and therefore not available by telephone.
 
Student Portal and Teaching Arrangements
The module folder on the student portal will be the main repository for information and documentation pertaining to this module. It will include the following:
 
Announcements – for important notices (please check regularly)
 
Module Overview – for the module outline
 
Lecture Notes & Presentations – Lecturers will use this section to post lecture slides, and other relevant session documents (e.g. supplementary information, tutorial notes etc.)
 
Shared Documents – All other relevant information, e.g. coursework information, revision information, appropriate electronic resources and web-based links etc. 
 
The contact time for this module is as follows:
 
3 hours per week.  This will include lectures, group work and time to work on your coursework
 
Students are expected to undertake self-directed study in their free time to develop a full understanding of the subject area and to complete their coursework
