The Core Competence and Icarus Paradox
Introduction
 
The core competence of enterprises, is the ability of market positioning and aligning customer demand and difficult for competitors to imitate. The core competence of enterprises is closely related with the development strategy, its essence is the innovation ability, in order to acquire this ability, need the full transformation of multidivisional structure, enterprise operation mechanism, measure and market entry, customer perception and its advantages in three indicators. Prahalad make the strategic research, knowledge management, organizational principle and innovation mechanism integrated into one which has unique style. Prahalad and his student Hamel, was awarded the academic status of strategic management thinkers.
 
There is a book called "The Icarus Paradox" book: “in Ancient Greek mythology, Icarus is locked in a small island surrounded by the sea. His father gave him a pair of wings, Icarus flew off the island. But he always flies to the sun and not willing to stop again, finally, his wings by the heat of the sun melted; it is no doubt, Icarus fell into the sea and was drowned”. (Miller D. 1990)This book was also used “The Perils of Excellence “under the title. In the book, Danny Miller explains why the organization was changed by its success: their advantage could become to weak, their success could become to failure.
 
Has the competence theory become the truth? Icarus paradox is the theory of inference or after example demonstration? Was a connection between core competence and the theory of Icarus?  This article carries on the elaboration one by one.

The Benefits of the Core Competence Theory
 
Prahalad and Hamel think, the core competence of enterprises is the ability of the enterprise internal collective learning, especially how to coordinate diverse production skills and integrate multiple technology. Different from the material capital, the core competence of enterprises will not be lost in use and sharing, and will continue to grow in this process. According to Prahalad and Hamel's view, the basic characteristic of the core competence is mainly embodied in three aspects: First of all, the core competence should reflect the long-term customer's value, a key contribution to the core interests of customers; secondly, core competence must be unique ability, and is difficult to be imitated by competitors and alternative; third, the core competence should be extended to wider areas of the market. The core competence is hard to imitate, enterprise core competence for the attention and research, in fact is the competition advantage to gain and maintain the competitive advantage of enterprises, and to the sustainable development of enterprises.
 
The Conflict between the Core Competence Theory and Icarus Paradox
 
Enterprises in the process of the establishment of the core competence, the organization -- the operating system, management procedures, principles and values, human resources system and leadership model, each other constantly adapt and adjust, by this way, the enterprise has gradually formed its own characteristics and organizational characteristics of competition. At the same time, the process of enterprise challenge in response to a variety of progressive development, and it has established a set of specific methods of operation and management. These management methods gradually evolved in the long process of business become a system. “This system is based on the good effect in the past; it avoids the cost for enterprise to find new ways. But in the long run, the system will inevitably lead to rigid organization. When the market environment changes, the core competence of enterprises had become a shackle, hindering enterprises to make timely adjustments to their own, this leads to the failure of enterprises.”(Chen M J. 2002) “Many enterprises are confused by their own core competitiveness, they believe that the problem is only temporary, they have the usual confidence. The results, because the enterprise becomes too specialized, so it can't see reality. In this way, sooner or later, the enterprise will fail”. (Rowley C, Bae 1998)
 
Not long ago, Microsoft purchased the mobile phone business of Nokia. Dominate the world for decades of Nokia, unable to get up after a fall. People can be summed it all sorts of errors in marketing, but its core competitiveness -- mobile phone technology, no one can deny the ability of Nokia. Nokia lack the ability which change technology into business, and this ability has not formed because Nokia’s ingrained conservative. Nokia executives believe that their responsibility is to improve their core competitiveness -- mobile phone technology. The Nokia senior executive Risku executives cited an example:” in the map business after the acquisition of Navteq, Nokia spend huge amounts of money; do not move in half year. At this time, Google maps are free, voice navigation is also free, and rivals are catching up." (Charles W. L. Hill, Gareth R. Jones 2012). As can be seen, the rigid Nokia has indeed to extinction. The Icarus Paradox has been fully demonstrated in the Nokia body.
